  • Identify a “project” for your students to work on during the course

Audio courses are the unsung heroes of online learning.

Why? Because they don’t require sitting in front of a computer to achieve your learning goals. Learners love audio courses because they’re flexible, portable, and intimate. Creators love them because they can be less of a hassle to create and lend themselves to a variety of uses.

You can turn an audio course into a series for your podcast, a sales campaign for another offer, a standalone paid learning experience, an add-on to coaching, a list-building incentive, and more.

But as with any digital learning experience, the design of the course makes all the difference. What you decide to include, the structure you give it, the way you communicate the material—every variable matters when you want to help people learn new skills or gain new understandings.

I’ve been building online learning experiences since 2011. I’ve made all the mistakes. And I won’t pretend to know it all now. But with more than a decade of experience and hundreds of hours of both live and prerecorded teaching, I’ve developed a system that makes me confident that every time I teach, my students will get results.

In this full-day workshop, you’ll complete a plan to create a compelling audio course. I’ll walk you through how to:

  • Select the overall learning outcome students want to achieve

  • Identify a “project” for your students to work on during the course

  • Choose learning objectives that keep students engaged for the duration of the course

  • Structure the course to overcome obstacles to learning

  • Design onboarding and offboarding to put your students at ease

  • And select supplementary materials to turn audio learning into real-world action

Plus, I’ll go over a basic tech setup that anyone can use to create their first audio course.

Date: May 11, 2023

  • Session 1: 11am-12:30pm ET (Overall outcome, student project, learning objectives)

  • Session 2: 1:30pm-3:00pm ET (Structure, onboarding/offboarding)

  • Session 3: 4pm-5:30pm ET (Supplementary materials, production 101, tech setup)

Between sessions, you’ll complete parts of your audio course plan so that by the end of the day, you have a plan you can get to work on.

Follow-Up Q&A: May 18, 2023

Time: 12:00pm ET (60 minutes)

Price: $500

Limit: 12 participants

  • The workshop is held on Zoom. You’re welcome to participate with your camera on or off. And you can ask questions using chat or voice.

Each session will be recorded for review. But you should plan to participate live. If you can’t make it live, please wait and sign up for a session when you can make it live.

You’ll also receive worksheets and templates to make your course design as simple as possible. But you can also use pen & paper, sticky notes, whiteboards, flow charts, or whatever medium is best for you!

I’ll answer questions live during each session. And there is also a follow-up Q&A session to ensure any fuzzy concepts are cleared right up!

  • You’ll need Zoom to participate in the workshop.

Beyond that, we recommend Descript to make editing as easy as possible—especially if you’ve never edited audio content before! I’ll demo this software during the final session.

You’ll probably be able to use Descript’s free plan to create your course, depending on its length. You can also use Descript to create video content.

Audacity is another great option for audio editing, and it’s open source and free to use.

Depending on how you plan to deliver your course, you may need a podcast host. We recommend Transistor.FM because it offers unlimited feeds and makes it super easy for people to add a private podcast to their favorite podcast app.

If your course is part of a paid membership or you want extra security for paid courses, we recommend Hello Audio as a podcast host that specializes in creating paid audio content.

  • If you’ve got something to teach and a desire to put it in audio form, this workshop is for you. Most of my experience is working with entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, and thought leaders who create courses as products or marketing. But this course would be equally beneficial for authors, educators, and trainers who are looking to work in new media and reach new audiences.

  • There are no refunds for this workshop due to its limited capacity. If a conflict comes up that means you won’t be able to participate live, you’re welcome to transfer your registration to someone else.

  • This workshop will highlight the basics of course design for adult learners, as well as some of the idiosyncracies of creating audio content. However, the principles you’ll learn can be easily applied to a video course, too.
